WHY WE DO IT
We know that not every woman has access to the resources necessary for effective family planning, and we want to change that, because preventing unplanned pregnancy means:
increased ability to plan pregnancies
better educational and economic outcomes
more stable families
increased health and happiness for women and children
"I chose a long term reversible method of birth control because I have goals in my life. I want to finish college and I want to get a better education and find a stable job before I have children."
- Destiny, A Step Ahead Foundation client
Claudia Haltom founded a A Step Ahead Foundation in 2011 after 17 years as a Juvenile Court Judicial Magistrate in Memphis, TN. During her time on the bench, Haltom experienced many interactions with women who became pregnant while in school, dropped out, and became mothers before they said they were emotionally, physically, or financially ready. Before A Step Ahead Foundation, these young women did not have easy and affordable access to the most effective methods of reversible birth control. Claudia Haltom devoted her retirement to changing that and supporting women to plan their futures and achieve their goals and potential.
Following the success of A Step Ahead Foundation of Memphis, many other cities in Tennessee brought the program to their own communities. In 2015, A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee was created to serve the women and families of Nashville and the surrounding area.
